Interim Personal Electronic Devices Policy

The use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices in the classroom has become an increasing concern. The modern learning environment presents numerous electronic distractions that can impede students’ focus and academic performance. OSS staff are particularly concerned about the following issues associated with smartphones and other devices in the classroom:

  • Disruption to Learning: Smartphones reduce students’ concentration and academic engagement.
  • Constant Interruptions: Notifications and calls continuously distract students from learning.
  • Unauthorized Absences: Students may leave class to take calls or respond to messages, disrupting their learning.
  • Privacy Violations: Unauthorized recording of photos or videos breaches policy and compromises security.
  • Cyberbullying: Increased social media use has led to more cyberbullying, harming the school environment.
  • Increased Dependency: Growing reliance on devices may hinder the development of essential life skills.

Ohpaho Secondary School Policies

  1. Storage: Students must store personal electronic devices in their lockers during class. This includes smartwatches, cell phones and earbuds.
  2. Permitted Use: Devices may be used before school, during breaks, lunch, on buses, and after school. They must remain in lockers during class.
  3. Required Equipment: Students should bring their own calculators to class.
  4. Classroom Spaces: The learning commons, gymnasiums, shop, and foods lab are classified as classrooms. Devices are not allowed in these areas during class time. High school students on spares may use their devices in the learning commons.
  5. Confiscation: Devices found in classrooms or shared spaces during class will be confiscated and taken to the student’s grade administrator with the incident recorded.
  6. Repeat Offenses: Multiple violations may be treated as willful disobedience and could result in further disciplinary action.

By implementing this policy, OSS aims to enhance student learning by providing a distraction-free environment, allowing students to focus fully. We are committed to preparing students for the expectations of their future workplaces.
